2nd Annual Audie Furgal Tennis Classic is June 29th
PITTSFIELD – The second annual Audie Furgal Tennis Classic will take place on Saturday, June 29 at Berkshire West Athletic Club and various other tennis venues throughout Berkshire County. The fundraising event will benefit the Lee Community Tennis Association (Lee CTA) and Porchlight VNA/Home Care who are the beneficiaries of the event.
The tennis classic will be played in a round robin format with opportunities for individuals and doubles teams of all ages and skill levels. The inaugural event last year included 119 players from throughout the region in 11 different categories.
Play begins at 9:00 a.m. on June 29, and will be followed by a poolside luncheon at noon at Berkshire West. The luncheon will be catered by Guido’s Fresh Marketplace.
Audie Furgal, a Lee resident and longtime devoted member of the Lee CTA, loved playing tennis and spent many hours on the courts enjoying the fun and benefits of the game. Audie passed away in 2012 after a year-long battle with lung cancer. During her illness, she received many of the wonderful services provided by Porchlight VNA/Home Care.
“Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success in honor of Audie, who had such a passion for the game of tennis,” said Lee CTA Executive Director Clare “Bunnie” Lahey. “We encourage players to come out and take part again in this fun, high-quality round robin event. It’s great tennis for a wonderful cause.”
Dollars raised will benefit the Lee CTA youth tennis programs and Porchlight VNA/Home Care’s Telemonitoring program. This medical technology allows the vital signs of patients to be monitored remotely. The telemonitoring system enhanced Mrs. Furgal’s quality of life during her illness, allowing her to stay in her own home.
“Porchlight’s Telemonitoring program enhances the quality of care in the communities we serve. It helps identify problems earlier and avoid hospitalizations,” said Porchlight President and CEO Holly Chaffee. “This technology has meant so much to the Furgal family. I cannot think of a more appropriate way to honor Audie’s legacy than to continue to invest in the telemonitoring program.”
